Tonya Griffin, born April 9, 1966, passed away peacefully at home on the Griffin Ranch in Newton, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with an aggressive form of cancer. Though her health presented challenges throughout her life, Tonya’s spirit, determination, and love for others never wavered.
Tonya grew up in Newton on her family’s farm, where she spent her childhood milking cows, moving pipe, and bailing hay. She was a natural athlete who shined on the tennis court, basketball court, and soccer field during high school. Her adventurous, competitive spirit carried her to Utah State University, where she joined Kappa Delta sorority and graduated in 1989 with a degree in Business Marketing.
While her professional path began in business, Tonya’s heart ultimately led her to her true calling—teaching and coaching. For 30 years she taught computers and for a decade she coached girls’ basketball, becoming not just an educator, but a mentor and role model who left a lasting mark on countless students. Her classroom was a place where learning thrived, and her teams knew the power of encouragement, perseverance, and passion. Students absolutely loved her, and her impact will ripple through generations.
On September 9, 1990, Tonya married Sean Voeller, and together they welcomed their daughter, Haley, on November 18, 1991. Haley was the joy of Tonya’s life, a joy multiplied when she became a grandmother to Ayla, August, and Nash. Her grandchildren became her greatest delight and her proudest role. She retired early to spend more time with them—sharing four-wheeler rides, trampoline jumps, and even Fortnite battles. To her grandkids, she wasn’t just a grandmother; she was their biggest cheerleader and playmate.
Tonya also had a lifelong love for horses, inspired by watching her father and brother team penning before eventually joining in herself. Later in life, Tonya found love again, marrying Celia Broadhead on November 14, 2014. Together they built a life filled with joy, laughter, and devotion on the family farm, creating a home where love was abundant.
Tonya is survived by her parents, Terry and Sue Griffin; her spouse, Celia Broadhead; her daughter Haley (Colby) Tracy; her beloved grandchildren Ayla, August, and Nash; and her siblings Trudy (Matt) Barnes, Chad (Kari) Griffin, Cory (Elise) Griffin, Cami Godfrey, and Calee (Jared) Johnson. She is also remembered by a wide circle of nieces, nephews, students, teammates, and friends who loved her deeply.
Tonya lived her life with courage, kindness, and humor, always giving more than she received and never letting her health define her. She will be remembered for her grit on the farm, her leadership on the court, her wisdom in the classroom, and her boundless love as a mother and grandmother.
Her life was a gift to all who knew her, and her legacy will continue to shine brightly through her family, her students, and the community she loved.
