Thelma Layne

October 4, 1946 — April 8, 2025

Providence

Thelma Layne, born in 1946, died April 8, 2025. She was one of nine children born to Ruth Pratt Layne and Delbert Russell Layne. Her sisters are Rieta (deceased), Debbie, Delsa, Darleen, Eva (deceased) and Vonda. Her brothers died at birth, Larry and Gary. She graduated from South Cache High. She also graduated from Painter's School of Cosmetology. She also took many classes in Early Childhood Development and in Special Needs at Utah State University. Throughout her early life, she worked in many retail stores in Logan. Thelma enjoyed working with children at Bear River Head Start and she held many positions as teacher, aide, bus driver, resource coordinator and lunchroom assistant. She was involved in a car accident that left her disabled and she retired. Thelma loved the many years she volunteered at Somebody's Attic. She stated that she learned something new every day that she was there. She was so grateful to the staff and volunteers that worked there for giving her the opportunity to be there. She made many friends throughout her service there.

Although she never attended church, Thelma was very religious in her own way. She believed in Guardian Angels. They were throughout her house and in her yard. She welcomed into her home many young people and helped them to become successful in their lives. When weather permitted, there were always extra chairs on Thelma's front lawn. Family, relatives and neighbors were always welcome to visit and they did so quite frequently. She enjoyed the children in her neighborhood as they walked by on their way to school. She also enjoyed watching the sunset and enjoyed the beauty that was around her. Thelma walked many miles every day and was known by some as "The Walking Lady". Even though her life was full of sorrow and tragedy, Thelma kept a positive attitude. She often said, "Something wonderful is going to happen", and it often did. Thelma was a very charitable person. She was the first to offer help if you were ever in need of an item or a listening ear. Many times, she surprised her neighbors with bowls of hot soup or egg sandwiches. She will be greatly missed and remembered by all who were lucky enough to have her in their lives.

Thelma was always grateful for even the smallest kindnesses shown to her. She especially wished to thank the members of Providence First Ward for snow removal, for mowing her lawn and the gifts of fruits and vegetables. She was so thankful for the neighbors who gave her a yard makeover and for their loving friendship. It was always a pleasure to serve Thelma because of her sincere gratitude in return.

She also wanted to thank her doctors and nurses to know she was thankful for their care. She wanted to extend a special thanks to Dr. Glenn Roberson and the staff at Maple Springs and Rocky Mountain Care. Thelma greatly appreciated and wanted to especially thank Orin for his many years of companionship and for letting her be just as she was. She also wanted to thank his family for accepting her and including her in their family.

Thelma is survived by her two sons, Robert Clair Evans, and Sheldon Ray Bindrup (Toad) and her five grandchildren and many great grandchildren. She dearly loved her children and grandchildren. She often went without so she could give to them.
