Sandra “Sandy” Hancey Wright, born December 1, 1952, passed away peacefully after a long, courageous battle with dementia.
Sandy was the eldest daughter of Owen and Jacky Hancey of Millville, Utah. Born in Logan, Utah, she grew up on the family farm in Millville, where her lifelong passion for horses took root as she rode and barrel raced alongside her siblings.
In 1973, Sandy married Marlowe Carroll, with whom she had three children; they later divorced. In 1980, she married Roy Whiting, with whom she had two children; they later divorced. In 2015, Sandy married Steve Wright, embarking on a vibrant, adventurous life together. They traveled widely and checked off many items on Sandy’s bucket list, with fond memories made yearly in Las Vegas for the National Finals Rodeo, All-In-One Barrel Race, trips to California for Disneyland and horse racing, a getaway to Hawaii, and countless destinations in between.
Deeply involved in her community and the rodeo world, Sandy gave her time and heart to the Utah High School Rodeo Association (UHSRA), cherishing her years timing at the Utah High School State Finals and serving as secretary for the Bridgerland High School Rodeo Club (BHSRC). Sandy was a cowgirl through and through—a barrel racer at heart who was happiest on the back of her horse Headlight.
Over the years, Sandy worked a variety of jobs, forming lasting friendships and serving those around her wherever she went. She never met a stranger, seeing the good in everyone she encountered. Known for her grit and work ethic, she tackled every job with pride and never backed down from a hard day’s work.
Above all, Sandy was a fiercely devoted, unapologetically tough mom to her five kids: Tee, Nat, Howie (her favorite), Niki, and Shelly. Her world revolved around them, and she never missed a chance to cheer them on—whether in the rodeo arena or in life. They were her proudest accomplishment. Her hospitality knew no bounds; her door was always open, and over the years, her home became a sanctuary for many beyond her own family.
Sandy is survived by her loving husband, Stephen M. Wright of Mt. Sterling; her five children, Tanya (Jeff) Seely of Mt. Sterling, Natalie (Bruce) Jenson of Nibley, Howard (Jamie) Carroll of Nibley, Nicole (Derrick) Porter of Morgan, and Michelle (Andrew) Jensen of Mt. Sterling, stepdaughters, Stephanie (Troy) Nielsen of Millville and Jennifer (Brady) Rasmussen of Layton; and her beloved herd of little cowboys and cowgirls: Fallon (Allen), Braxton, Brinley (Bransen), Kyler, Rylan, Kooper, Kaden, Keaton, Keelie, Madtie (Skyler), Sadee (Shad), Tate (Abby), Austin (Chelsey), Alexis (Dillan), Jake, and Ella. Grandma loved each of you deeply and held immense pride in every single one of your accomplishments. Great-granddaughters; Emrey and Gracie. Siblings; Steve, Shonna, Dawn, Fran, Kyle (June).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Owen and Jacky Hancey; her sister, Lynda; her aunt, Kitty; her infant brother, Hancey, whom she missed dearly; both her paternal and maternal grandparents; many other aunts and uncles, a stepson Kurt Wright, and her nephew Bartley Jensen.

Mom, we love you more than you will ever know. We hope you and Shoe are running the prettiest barrel patterns and taking in the best rodeos together. Give Grandma and Grandpa a hug for us. We’ll see you soon, cowgirl.
