Roger Douglas

May 23, 1947 — August 12, 2025

Roger Kent Douglas passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on August 12, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on May 23, 1947 to Ray and Pearl Douglas in Logan, Utah.

Roger had a wonderful childhood filled with precious memories of time spent with his brothers in beautiful Hyde Park, Utah.

Roger graduated as part of Sky View High School’s first graduating class in 1965. Demonstrating his commitment to faith and service, Roger served an honorable mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Southern California Mission from 1966-1968. Following his mission, he pursued higher education at Utah State University, where he graduated in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in education and a minor in physical education. Roger continued his academic journey, earning a master’s degree in education from the same institution.

Roger married his red headed sweetheart Marilyn Sorenson on September 10, 1970 in the Logan LDS Temple. Together they loved to 4-wheel and travel, especially cruising. They are blessed with six wonderful children, Brandon (Jill), Bruce (Tara), Carrie (Brad), Darren (Kathy), Bryce (Jennifer) and Sara (Derek). Twenty-four grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren were blessed to call him grandpa.

Roger’s extensive career as a woodworker and shop teacher had a profound impact on his students. His dedication to craftsmanship and education at North Layton Junior High and North Davis Junior High from 1972-2002 helped inspire many young minds. Being recognized as Teacher of The Year by Davis School District in 2000 further exemplifies his commitment and the positive influence he had on his students’ lives.

For 15 years, during his summer breaks, Roger was a dedicated Forest Ranger for the Cache National Forest. He helped construct many of the trails and the iconic brown and yellow camp and rest stop signs throughout Logan Canyon. A true enthusiast of the great outdoors, Roger enjoyed hunting, scuba diving, camping, Dutch oven cooking, river rafting, snowmobiling and especially 4-wheeling. No camping trip was complete without his famous scones or “light-as-feather” pancakes which required rocks or a generous dose of peanut butter to keep them from floating away.

Roger was beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend who dedicated his life to serving his Savior, Jesus Christ. His unwavering faith and commitment were evident through his many callings within the church. He served faithfully as Bishop, High Counselor, Scout Master and a teacher in the primary, nursery, Sunday School and Young Men's. He was especially proud to serve as a temple worker in the Logan LDS Temple.

Roger was a man of many talents and gifts. He enjoyed photography, was a skilled leather and wood worker. His greatest gift however, was his ability to make everyone feel special, included and loved. His warm heart and genuine compassion brought light to countless individuals. Roger’s legacy will be remembered through the joy and warmth he spread to others.

Roger is preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Pearl Douglas and his lifelong friends and brothers in law, Brent, Ralph and Allen Sorenson.

A viewing will be held on Friday August 15, 2025 from 5pm-8pm as well as Saturday August 16, 2025 from 10am-11:15am prior to the funeral services at 12pm. Viewings and funeral will take place at the LDS Church on 640 N 200 E Smithfield, Utah.
