Richard A Olson, 90, passed peacefully away with his family by his side, on September, 7, 2024. at his daughter's home in Hyrum. Resulting from a long battle with dementia and a short hospital stay following a fall with a broken hip.
Richard was born in Millville, Utah, on January 3, 1934, to Newel Charles and Florence Christina Anderson Olson. His siblings are Alden (deceased), Douglas, Nola (deceased), Marilyn, and Brent (deceased).
He grew up in Millville and attended Millville Grade School and graduated from South Cache High School. He joined the army with his buddies and spent 2 years in Okinawa, Japan. They signed the treaty for the Korean War when he was on the boat to Korea. He spent that time driving the general from place to place.
Richard met Alice Ruth Welker dragging main street in his dark green Pontiac with yellow skirts in Logan, Utah. They married for time and all eternity in the Logan LDS Temple on October 14, 1955. Almost 68 years together, through thick and thin, they spent most of their married life in Millville. They cherished their 5 children Steven Richard (Elizabeth) Erda, Ut; Michael Bryan (deceased) (Betty) Bountiful, Ut; Pamela Alice (James Meyer) Hyrum, Ut: Debra Ann, Logan, Ut; Monica Sue (Darrin Clark), Millville, Ut.
After serving in the Army, Richard went back to his job at Sears on North Main in Logan, Ut. A big layoff left him jobless with a small family to provide for. He then started work with his brother at Tri-Miller Meat Packing in Hyrum, UT. From there he found his loved job at Mountain Fuel Supply Company. He was a service man installing meters and troubleshooting as well. He enjoyed the fact that he could look at an address and know exactly where it was. Or seeing someone's name and knowing their exact address.
He usually had a side job he worked in the evenings or on the weekends. He worked with Stan Barrett building homes in the early 70's and Don's Auto Body was a favorite hang out since the late 70's.
After retiring early at 56, he loved roaming the streets of Cache Valley in his pickup. He enjoyed stopping to visit with friends or strangers lurking outside. Richard and Alice really enjoyed camping with his retired work buddies.
Richard had a strong testimony of Jesus Christ and served many callings in the LDS Church; Ward Clerk, Ward Missionary, Sunday School and Primary teacher. Richard and Alice served a mission to the Mississippi Jackson Mission, but spent a majority of their time in Arkansas. Being a man of few words his service was mowing lawns and doing misc. yard work etc. (not much different from being at home). After their mission they joined the Good Timers Camping Club and spent many a weekend up Blacksmith Fork Canyon in their trusty trailer.
Some of his hobbies included building dollhouses for the granddaughters, benches and chairs as planters for Christmas presents, rebuilding old cars, mowing lawns and driving his truck all over Cache Valley. People will remember Richard as being a good neighbor, a loving family man, an active church member and his extra dry humor with his one-liners.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his son Michael, his son-in-law Lyle Ballard, his brothers Alden and Brent, his sister Nola. He is survived by his wife Alice, his son Steven, daughters Pamela, Debra, and Monica, 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren.
