Richard John Jensen, 77, passed away on December 1, 2025, from metastatic cancer.
He was born February 7, 1948, in Richfield, Utah, to M. Rex and Emily Roberts Jensen. He married Carol Jorgensen on March 18, 1970, in the Logan LDS Temple. They have seven children: Tara, Troy, Todd (Jennalyn Parry), Tessa (Tom Sunderland), Tyler, Tonya (Michael Otteson), and Tim (Caci Larsen). They also have 13 grandchildren.
Richard graduated from Bear River High School as an All-American basketball player and earned a full-ride athletic scholarship to Utah State University. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Utah State University and a doctoral degree from Brigham Young University.
He worked for Logan City School District for 34 years and Cache County School District for six years in a variety of roles, including personnel, curriculum, and superintendent. Richard especially enjoyed teaching American government, social studies, and drivers education. He valued the relationships he had with his students.
Richard was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed serving in various church roles throughout his life. As a young man, Richard served an LDS mission in the Midwest, then known as the Central States Mission. Shortly after his retirement, he served in Stillwater, Oklahoma, at the Oklahoma State University Institute, where he loved teaching and conversing with the young adult attendees. He later enjoyed serving in the Logan LDS temple and loved learning about the history and symbolism of this temple.
Richard lived a life full of curiosity, service, and devotion to his family. He had a deep love for American and church history, often traveling to explore historic sites and share his knowledge with others. He had a gift for helping others weigh facts and evidence, encouraging them to reach their own conclusions. For him, teaching was not merely a profession but a calling, and he delighted in nurturing growth, learning, and open-mindedness in all he taught.
Known for his quick wit and hilarious sense of humor, he brought joy and laughter to everyone around him. Richard was always eager to be a part of things and that included traveling and helping his children with projects or other needs. He had a gift for making friends wherever he went. His circle of friends spanned generations, and he was especially loved by many young adults who admired his humor, wisdom, and genuine care for them.
He found joy in the everyday—running errands, exercising, reading, studying, and watching sports. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Richard is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and brother, Michael (Linda). He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, DeAnn (Clark); brother, Robert; son, Tyler; and granddaughter, Rachel.
The family extends special thanks to the excellent staff at the Gossner Cancer Center and Logan Regional Hospital.
