Janis Winkler

December 4, 1947 — December 15, 2025

Jackson County, Oregon

Janis G Winkler, 78, passed away in Medford, Oregon on Monday, December 15th. She was born on December 4th, 1947 in Long Beach, California. She was the 2nd child of Sylvester Alvin Moffett and Vernie Alberta (Short) Moffett both of whom preceded her in death.

Janis is survived by her three siblings, Wayne (Candis) Moffett, Beverly (Quentin) Decker, and Ellen (Randy) Sibbett. She is also survived by her children, Stacie Dahl, Debbie Winkler, Angie (Ryan) Nakao, Shelly (Jared) Johnson, Jerry (Kaori) Winkler, Brian (Stephanie) Winkler, and 18 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, David Alvin Winkler, and her son-in-law, Kyle John Dahl.

Janis was raised in Huntington Beach, California. As a child, she was quiet and was a good student who enjoyed climbing trees and riding bikes. She learned to play the clarinet in 5th grade and started marching band in 6th grade. Janis attended Huntington Beach High School where she played the saxophone in the school’s marching band. She marched in several parades. Janis attended BYU and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. While in college, she did a study abroad trip to Mexico City for a summer.

After graduating from BYU, Janis moved back to Huntington Beach and taught 4th grade in Seal Beach. Janis met her husband, Dave, while attending young adult activities when they were both teaching school in Los Angeles County, California. They were married for eternity in the Los Angeles California Temple on April 14, 1973.

Janis and Dave raised 6 children in Huntington Beach, and Janis was a stay-at-home mom to their children. She spent her time taking her children to the library and parks, helping with homework, providing summer school lessons for her children, and going along on every family adventure. Her family adventures included numerous long road trips and camping trips.

When her children got older, Janis worked as a medical records director in a Skilled Nursing Facility and in the Family Consumer and Human Development department at Utah State University.

Janis and Dave moved to River Heights, Utah after Dave retired in 2003. She loved having kids and grandkids visit them in their River Heights home. She did her best to attend every graduation, baptism, priesthood ordination, and even church musical numbers.

Janis served 3 missions with Dave. They served in Nauvoo where they dressed as pioneers and led tours to visitors, Salt Lake City Utah Church Headquarters, and in Ogden, Utah. Janis served in many church callings and performed countless acts of service for her family, friends, and ward family.

Janis loved chocolate and typically had a stash of chocolate somewhere in the house. She enjoyed reading and doing puzzles. She was quiet and had a very calm personality. She could calm any baby down. She spent countless hours reading to her children and grandchildren.

Janis lived with dementia for several years at the end of her life. We love her and will miss her so much, but are grateful for her to have her memories back and be the same Janis she was before dementia.
