Janet Lee Young

Janet Lee "Jan" Young, 78, of Clarkston, Utah, a Cache Valley resident for over 55 years, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Jan was born on March 21, 1948, in Akron, Ohio, to Nels and Mary (Rittman) Young. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Linda Bargerhuff, and brother Robert Young. Surviving are her brother Del (Nora) Young of Groveland, Illinois, cousins, nieces & nephews, and many grand nieces & nephews, especially Frankie, who she loved sharing pictures and videos of with friends far and wide!

Jan grew up in the Hudson, Ohio, area before moving to a small farm in Atwater, skipping her freshman year in high school and graduating in 1965 at age 17. Always brilliant, Jan earned a BS degree in Biology from Hiram College in Ohio in 1969. Her independent streak blossomed as she headed West in her Toyota HiLux pickup truck with camper, exploring many State and National Parks while pursuing graduate degrees at Utah State Univ in Logan. There she earned an MS in Zoology and a PhD in Ornithology. Jan enjoyed teaching at Elder Hostels, educational enrichment for seniors focusing on birding and nature. She also worked several summers at a Girl Scout Camp at Flathead Lake in Montana, teaching future leaders a greater appreciation of nature.

Jan expanded her horizons by earning an MS in Environmental Education from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. However, all roads led back to Cache Valley and the mountains she fell in love with, and which brought her so much peace and comfort. Highly intelligent with an amazing memory, she could recall events and details from decades ago that the rest of us had long forgotten.

Jan moved to Clarkston in October 2008. A devoted animal lover, she found a home that gave her the space to care for every creature that crossed her path. Jan always welcomed animals in need, and over the years she cared for so many, including llamas, goats, chickens, cats and dogs, especially her beloved Hali and Zoey (and Kokolik in earlier times).

Those who knew Jan will remember the meaningful conversations they shared and the stories of her life, filled with a love of learning, education and nature. Her friends will always be grateful for the example she set of finding joy in quiet moments. Jan found great happiness in the natural beauty that surrounded her, at home and wherever her adventures took her.

Jan will be deeply missed by her community. Many enjoyed seeing her riding her trike during the cool morning and evening hours. Her compassion for animals and her appreciation for the beauty of Cache Valley will continue to inspire all of us who had the blessing of knowing her. As Jan would say, rather than goodbye: Love you soon!

Cremation has been accorded. A memorial/celebration of life will be held at a later date.
