Janet Masco

Aug 9, 1952 — Oct 13, 2026

Hyrum, Utah

Janet Lynn Crandall Masco passed away on October 13, 2026, in Logan, Utah. She was born August 9, 1952, in Provo, Utah to Lars G. Crandall and Marie Ferrin Crandall. She came from pioneer heritage, with most Utah ancestors located in the southern Utah valley area and the Eden Utah area.

She is survived by her eternal companion Larry Masco of Hyrum, Utah and her children. Also by her sister Colleen Liechty of Provo, Utah and sister-in-law Connie Crandall of Springville, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Greg Crandall, and her nephew Levi Liechty. Also, her mother-in-law, Sara Masco, played an indispensable role in her life.

Several Aunts and Uncles were a very active part of her life. Many fond conversations and interactions were the fruits of those relationships, filling the void of her earthly parents in her last 45 years.

She spent most of her childhood in Provo. She attended Brigham Young University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She lived in Hawaii for one year serving as a nanny and enjoying the culture and landscape there. She returned late in her life with some family members to revisit there.

She served a brief mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Italy.

In 1982, she married Larry Masco in the Provo, Utah Temple. It was “city girl marries country boy”. They lived in the St. George, Utah, and Kanab, Utah area for nearly 10 years and then located in Manti, Utah, where they spent 30 years raising their five children. After Larry retired in 2020, they moved to Hyrum, Utah.

Five children were nurtured by her kind nature. Bowen Masco (Christina) of St. George, Utah; Jani Masco of St. George, Utah; Rylar Masco (Nicole) of South Jordan, Utah, Lindsay Mellor (Caleb) of Riverton, Wyoming, and Sarena Masco of Orem, Utah. She counted nine grandchildren as the treasures of her life. LynnDee, Eli and Ella Masco of St. George, Utah; Emma, Joselyn, Braelyn and Clark Mellor of Riverton, Utah; and Milo and Mayzie Masco of South Jordan, Utah.

In her professional life, she worked as a paraeducator and temple custodian. For a period of time, she did day care out of her home on 100 South in Manti, Utah

In her social life, she made so many friends throughout her 74 years. She was a longtime member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and enjoyed the sociality of the Sanpete County Red Hat Ladies. And she made a lot of new friends during her several months in the hospital this summer.

She enjoyed reading and audiobooks; mostly light murder/mystery, romance, and church topics. She delighted in making Rice Krispie treats for her children and grandchildren, and her version of chile rellenos for family gatherings. Zucchini muffins were commonly baked for friends, neighbors, and special occasions. She made an awesome homemade Ranch dressing mix. Her love of steamed broccoli and dislike of liver made for some fun conversations in the home because Larry was just the opposite on both.

Another humorous part of their relationship was Janet’s propensity to go to the garden center in Manti often to buy flowers to transplant. She loved growing and tending her flower gardens…leaving the vegetable garden to Larry. Larry would tease her that she backed the car up to the garden center and the trunk just popped open, and plants jumped in. Flowers and plants adorned her home and yard, and were so prominent during her stay in the hospital. She delighted in a small Garden of Eden atmosphere.

One of her trademarks was how much she liked cheese, particularly cheddar…it was common for her to say “more cheese please”.

Technology was challenging, but she did learn how to text. And she sure knew how to access her audiobooks. She was a master at loading the dishwasher.

Janet did not have much to give in material generosity, but she had plenty of compassionate generosity. She was the epitome of the saying, “ A Life Well Lived Is More About Contribution and Charity, and Less About Accomplishment.

Her home was a place where her children loved to bring their friends to grab a snack, including “Heaven's drink”. She nurtured others in addition to her own children. It was common to have youth and young adults who needed a mother’s tender influence, to come to her home. Some came to “seek refuge from the storm”. During the past several years in Hyrum, she loved the cookouts when young adults would come to the home for food and fun. Deep friendships were formed.

She loved the church hymns and, in younger years, could be coaxed into joining a choir.

Janet just had a quiet way of touching people’s lives through love. She was an “influencer” in the old vintage sense of compassion and companionship.

It seems that part of her mission in life was to help others pause from the hectic pace and let the good come out of their souls. She had a way of drawing that out. And there were a few times in life when she had to be bold in standing for truth and right, and she did not hesitate.

As a devoted follower of Christ and lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she was firm and steadfast. She knew and sustained her Savior in the premortal councils; she followed Him as her Redeemer in this life; and she embraces Him in her postmortal life and service.

In church service, she served often in Primary and enjoyed Nursery and Sunbeams the most. She and Larry served a 3 year service mission as Pathway Connect Missionaries.

She was a devoted visiting teacher for many years. She was quietly faithful in every way to her covenants and to her Savior. During her five week hospital stay, as one of her final acts on earth, she declared that she was a faithful tithe payer. She liked ful words….beautiful, wonderful, thankful, helpful, mindful, cheerful, faithful, peaceful, and hopeful, and others. Her life can be summarized eloquently as Faith, Family, Friends. A picture frame above her mirror in the bathroom says: “You have touched so many in so many ways, because you cared so much”
