James Paul Miller, 92, died peacefully at his home in Mt. Sterling, UT on December 22, 2025 surrounded by family. He was born in Hyrum, UT on July 12, 1933 to Alton Grant and Inez Leishman Miller. He was the third of five children and was raised on the family farm. Paul attended school in Hyrum and graduated from South Cache.
Following high school, he married Mary Joyce Darley on September 19, 1952 in the Logan Utah Temple. Three children were born to Paul and Mary Joyce: Michelle, James Van and Martin Paul. Mary Joyce died in 1974.
On April 8, 1980 Paul married Suzann Roskelley. Four children were born to Paul and Suzann: James Paul II, Jill, Jann and Jeffrey Wayne.
Paul graduated from Utah State University earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He was a high school teacher at Weber and Logan High Schools. He also served as Vice-Principal at Logan High School and Mt. Logan Middle School and was Principal at Logan High School. He retired from education in 1975 and devoted the rest of his life to farming (milking cows, raising wheat, alfalfa and beef cattle).
Paul will be remembered for the love he had for his family. He loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The grandkids knew if they weren’t careful Grandpa would pinch their pointer fingers. He was a big believer in education and encouraged his family to get as much education as possible. He never turned down candy and loved anything from the Idle-Isle; he also loved his mother’s homemade divinity. Paul loved an ice-cold Coca Cola in the summer (any season really) after he came in from farming. While his favorite color was blue, he loved green John Deere tractors. Paul had a soft spot in his heart for all animals. He would be broken-hearted for several days when a newborn calf would die. In the final years of his life, he took care of a gaggle of barn cats. His kids remember going deer hunting with him and believe he purposely missed several large bucks because he did not like the idea of shooting them.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary Joyce, his sons Van and Marty, his daughter-in-law Wende, his parents, his brother Dennis (Margaret) and his sister Beverlee (Dee) Christensen. He is survived by his wife Suzann, his children Michelle (Chad) Summers, James (Krysten), Jill (Troy) Lowe, Jann (Lance) Leishman, Jeff (Whitney), 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother Richard (Sonja) and a sister Kathy (Jay) Baugh.
A viewing will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meeting house located at 125 North 400 West in Hyrum from 10:30 am – 12:00 pm. Interment and a grave-side service will follow in the Hyrum City Cemetery.
