J Gaurth Thompson

August 17, 1933 — August 29, 2024

Providence, Utah

J Gaurth Thompson, 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

He was born to Jesse Loosle Thompson and Devola Parker Sorensen on August 17, 1933 in Logan, Utah. He was the oldest of four children, Bruce (deceased), JoAnn and Norman. He was raised in Logan, graduating from Logan High School in 1951.

He always valued hard work. In his youth he delivered newspapers for the Herald Journal. As a teenager, he had a passion for working on cars. He began farming with his father and grandfather in Arbon Valley, Idaho in 1951 and continued farming until 2019. He found his eternal sweetheart at a young age. He married Carol Joyce Cooper on July 15, 1952 in the Logan temple. They began their family of eight children in 1953. Gaurth's strong work ethic continued throughout his life. He worked tirelessly through the summer and when the season shifted, he worked at Somer’s Music and Appliance. He was also a gifted mechanic and auto body repairman. Without any formal training, he taught himself many mechanical skills such as welding, auto body work, engine rebuilding, wiring, plumbing…he could fix virtually everything.

Gaurth was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served in numerous callings. Dad often told his children and grandchildren about his experiences as a worker in the Logan Temple for 20 years with much tenderness and gratitude.

He is survived by his sweetheart of 72 years, Joyce (Providence), and his eight children: Sid (Pam) Thompson (Pocatello), Lara Cook (River Heights), Tamra (Mark) Higgs (Texas), Michelle (Kelly) Webb (Arizona), Julie (Forrest) Fackrell (Providence), Angela (Dave) Anderson (North Logan), Kristy Kim (Fred) Bolingbroke (Syracuse) and Tyler (Melissa) Thompson (Pocatello).

He leaves behind 30 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister in law, Bruce and Barbara, grandson Lane, and son-in-law Robert Cook.
