Grace was born on January 15th, 2003, in Marshall, Missouri to Robert and Melanie Montierth while her parents were attending Missouri Valley College. She was the first of six wonderful blessings to enter her parents’ lives. When Grace was one and a half years old, she moved with her parents to Logan, Utah.
Grace was a carefree and outgoing child full of wonder and love. Those of you who know Becca (her 5 yr old, youngest sister), will have an idea of Grace’s demeanor at that time. She had a way to melt your heart and make you feel loved and special.
Grace became a big sister when she was nearly four years old. When Robert Seth was old enough, Grace took him under her wing and they did everything together. Wherever Grace went or whatever she did, Seth was by her side. Luckily, they did not get into too much mischief.
Grace attended Ellis Elementary School where she was known and loved by the faculty and students. When she was in second grade, she started taking piano lessons and that is when her love of music took off. Music has been a huge part of her life. At the age of ten, she became a big sister to another wonderful brother, Sam and then two years after that to her sweet sister, Ella.
After she finished sixth grade she moved with her family to Providence, Utah where she had to make new friends and attend a new middle school. During this time, she started playing and fell in love with volleyball. Nearing the end of her last year in middle school her next sibling Logan was born.
Grace attended Ridgeline High School. She played on the freshman volleyball team, but did not make the team her sophomore year and was crushed. Her mother wrestled when she was in high school and college, so Grace decided to give wrestling a try. Little did Grace know at that time how much of an impact wrestling would have on the rest of her life. Her mother started coaching wrestling at that time as well to help her and others become better wrestlers. Wrestling for a girl was hard at that time since it was not sanctioned for girls in the state of Utah yet, but her coaches treated her fairly and welcomed her onto the team and into their wrestling family. Grace won her first state championship that year. As her second year of wrestling began, her youngest sibling Becca joined the family. Grace won state that year as well and eventually went on to be a three-time state champion and High School All American. She attended Hastings College for one year directly after high school and placed 3rd in the KCAC Athletic Conference, qualifying her for NAIA Nationals. She has made many lasting friendships during those years.
Grace then decided to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served June – December 2022 at the Mormon Battalion Historic Site in San Diego, CA then proselyted in the Indiana, Indianapolis mission from December 2022 – November 2023. She touched many hearts and helped so many people while serving and continued those friendships long after.
After her mission, Grace transferred to Utah State University. During her time there, she decided to give back to her Alma Mater by joining the Ridgeline Girls Wrestling staff as one of their assistant coaches. Her mother was ecstatic to be coaching alongside her. She loved coaching those girls so much. Grace was close to completing her Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology when she passed away. So, Utah State University has awarded her bachelor’s degree posthumously.
Grace loved her family and friends dearly and was a light in all their lives. She was an excellent older sister to her siblings. Grace was very service-oriented, reaching out to those in need or discouraged, lifting them up, even if it was difficult for her to do so, often putting other’s needs before her own. She lived her life in the way the Savior has asked us to live. Grace was dating a wonderful young man for almost a year when she passed away. She is surely loved and we know she is with our Savior, Heavenly Father, and family that have passed on before her. She will be deeply missed.
