Obituary

Frederick Collin Barfus passed away at the age of 73 on June 15th, 2026 at his home in Hyrum, Utah having fought a short but valiant and courageous battle with melanoma liver cancer. Collin was born to Lloyd and Zola Mae Barfus on December 13th, 1952, at the Tremonton, Utah hospital. It happened to be a cold and stormy December morning. Perhaps this is where he developed his deep resentment of snow.

Collin spent his early years living in Howell UT and on his grandfather’s ranch in Faust valley. His family moved to Logan just before he started kindergarten.

From Logan they moved to Nibley and from there eventually to Paradise. A few years after graduating from high school he rented an apartment in Hyrum.

Collin was always hard working. As a young child of perhaps 10 years old he began working with his father on the cleaning crew at EA Miller and sons in Hyrum. After graduating from high school in 1971 he took a full-time position in the offal area at Millers. He worked there for almost 20 years when he left and went to work at Thiokol/ATK/Northrup Grummun. He retired from Northrop Grumman in 2020 having been an ideal and respected employee.

Collin has always been an unassuming quiet man. He is a hero to almost everyone whose path he crossed. Collins silent strong wisdom and dry sense of humor often left us in awe and amusement as to the depth of his gentle soul.

Collin is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and throughout his life he served many callings including the scouting program, teaching primary and serving in the Elders quorum presidency. However, he served best in the quiet sometimes unseen acts of service and kindness. Collin supported his family and friends faithfully. We always called on him to do the hard work like loading his truck full of furniture or junk to be hauled to the dump to name a few. Collin is an honest man of integrity. He liked to hunt, fish and ride horses. We often took rides up the canyon just to enjoy the stillness and beauty. On one of our last rides, he commented on how much things have changed up Blacksmith Fork Canyon and wished that he had purchased a piece of land when he was younger. If you asked Collin, what do you think, he would reply by saying it takes a big dog to weigh a ton.

Collin enjoyed collecting and shooting various kinds of rifles and guns. He also loved animals and had a gift for training horses. His wife Sheryl has fond memories of young colts following him around the pasture only to find out later that he had a carrot or two tucked in his pocket. Throughout his life he had numerous dogs and cats. It seemed like the mission of Sheryl and Valarie to bring any abandoned or stray animal’s home. Other than his horses Collins’ favorite animal was probably his little Chihuahua, Punky. He loved her and treated her like a Princess

Collin is survived by his wife Sheryl Barfus, Brother Bryan Barfus (Alice), Sister Vicky Jo Riddle. Sister-in-law Becky Bastion (Randy) Brother-in-law Ken Zabriskie (Jenn) Along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Valarie Ann Barfus, His parents Lloyd and Zola Mae Barfus, His in laws Douglas and Evelyn Zabriskie A sister-in-law Linda Wanner and two brother in laws Bruce Zabriskie and Jeff Zabriskie (Cindy).

Collin has so many great friends and neighbors and we are so grateful for all of the love and support they have given us this past few months.

We also want to express our gratitude to the Gossner Cancer Center and Doctor manning and his staff.

A funeral will be held on Friday, June 26th at 11:00 AM at the White Pine Funeral Home chapel, 753 South 100 East in Logan.  A viewing will be held the evening before on Thursday from 5:00-7:00 PM and from 9:30-10:30 AM prior to the funeral on Friday.  Interment will be in the Hyrum City Cemetery.  Messages and memories can be shared with the family by going to www.whitepinefunerals.com.
