Eva Coralie Nielsen Maughan

August 19, 1934 — December 12, 2023

Wellsville, UT

Eva Coralie Nielsen Maughan, age 89, was born August 19,1934 in Hyrum, Utah.  She was welcomed into her home by her parents Eva Cooper McBride and Weldon Jonas Nielsen, her older brother Derle Nielsen, and her older sister LaRae Nielsen Williamson.  Coralie had fond memories of growing up in Hyrum and helping on the family farm.  She especially enjoyed riding the hay derrick horse as her father put-up hay with the Jackson fork.  She attended South Cache High School and loved being a member of Sparta-Pep.  It was at South Cache that she met her sweetheart and future husband, Marshall Maughan.

Coralie and Marshall were married on June 24, 1953, in the Logan Temple.  Throughout the years, they welcomed seven children and raised them in their historic four-bedroom, one bathroom home in Wellsville.

Mom’s life was not without challenges.  In addition to raising seven children, one of whom suffered from a terminal illness and required a lot of extra care, Mom was the stabilizing force in our home and was truly a peacemaker.  She had an iron will – some might have called her stubborn – but she worked hard to do what needed to be done.  She was an excellent cook, she canned every fall, and was an excellent seamstress, quiltmaker, decorator, and had a particular knack for arranging flowers. She also served diligently in her church callings in primary, Relief Society, and over a decade in the church library.  Coralie enjoyed going to “Club” once a month with her dear friends; it was an enjoyable respite from her everyday tasks.  She shouldered all of her many responsibilities with kindness and determination.  Her favorite saying in her later years was “It’s fine, I’m fine, everything is fine!”

Mom took an enormous amount of pride in maintaining a well-kept, beautiful home inside and out. She was blessed with an incredible green thumb and her flower gardens were her pride and joy.  Her impressive variety of flowers, especially her roses and water features, filled her with many years of happiness.  She wore out her back digging in the dirt and enjoyed every minute of it.

Mom and Dad were also blessed with 18 grandchildren (one of whom she had the unexpected pleasure of delivering), and 37 great-grandchildren (with two more on the way). Mom spent many years being the babysitter for her grandkids and made sure to share her love of reading with them.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and her husband.  She suffered the devastating loss of two of her children, Nathan Maughan and Peggy Maughan Bankhead, as well as two grandchildren, Michelle Maughan and Cole Maughan.  She is survived by her devoted children: Cindy (John) Johnson, Mitchell (Molly) Maughan, Perry (Debbie) Maughan, Maleesa (Jeff) Cooper, and Zial Maughan.  She also had a special puppy, Tug, that kept her company in her later years.

Mom was determined to stay in her home and be independent.  With the help of her children and grandchildren, she accomplished her goal. Coralie passed away in her Wellsville home, surrounded by her loved ones, on December 12, 2023.

We wish to express our many thanks to her dear friends who always visited and took her on outings – she cherished those times and brought home many treasures from their shopping trips.
