Brent Garn Capener, 77, passed away November 6, 2025, in Logan, Utah after a short-fought battle with Liver Cancer.
Brent was born June 17, 1948, in Logan, Utah to Max Garn and Melba Jones Capener and was their second child. He spent his formative years working on the Capener family farm in Garland, Utah.
He graduated from Bear River High School in Garland, Utah in 1966 where he was active in the sports and music programs. He was also a four-year graduate of the Bear River LDS Seminary. After serving a mission in the Northwestern States he went on to graduate from Utah State University in 1974 with a BA in Political Science and Business Administration.
Brent began his career in steel with Boman and Kemp in Ogden, Utah. He was one of the first people hired at the Nucor Steel Mill in Plymouth, Utah. Brent worked tirelessly for Nucor Steel for 34 years as the Sales Coordinator. His responsibilities included overseeing the Sales Department and scheduling production for two rolling mills. His work at the Nucor Steel Mill brought him a great deal of satisfaction. His co-workers will remember him as someone who always made the time to listen and to talk with each of them as a friend.
In 1983 Brent met Laurie L. Nelson on a blind date. They were married in Clearfield, Utah on June 1, 1984. They and their children were sealed for time and eternity in the Logan Temple on August 16, 1986.
Brent and Laurie lived in Country Manor in Logan, Utah for eight years, becoming members of the then new Logan 41st Ward. They then moved to Providence, Utah where they lived for 33 years, participating in the Providence 8th/Fruitland Acres Wards. They just recently moved to Cobblestone on Spring Creek in Providence, Utah this past December 2024. Brent’s service in the LDS Church included Sunday School President, Elders Quorum President, Second Councilor in the Bishopric, Ward Clerk, Stake Clerk, Ward Mission Leader, Second Councilor in the Sunday School Presidency and Home Teacher. He heartily supported his wife in her callings for many years and was sometimes known by his other title, ‘Sister Capener’s husband’. He was devoted to his family. He was an excellent provider, a devoted son, a little brother, and a loving husband, Father, grandfather (Papa) and friend. His hobbies included motorcycles, camping, fishing, hunting, and anything that dealt with the great outdoors. His motto in life was: “The heights that great men reached and kept were not obtained through sudden flight, but they while their companions slept, were toiling upward in the night.” He was also fond of saying “A place for everything and everything in its place.” We will wait with tender patience for the time that we can be together again.
Brent is survived by his wife, Laurie L. Capener; his daughter, Jana Lynne Alexander, granddaughter Mikayla Grace Alexander of Logan, Utah; his son, Michael Allyn Alexander, his wife Elia and their children Naomi, Franco and Luca Allyn of Park City, Utah; his brother-in-law, E. Jay Peck (Jeanie) of Farmington, Utah; his three nieces, one nephew and many great-nieces and nephews; his brothers-in-law, Richard G. Nelson (Brenda) of Pawcatuck, Connecticut, Keith B. Nelson of Payson, Utah and sister-in-law, Lisha McMillan (Danny) of Clearfield, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Joan Capener Peck. He will be dearly missed by many other family members, friends, and co-workers. We love you Brent and will miss you so much and can hear you saying “Ditto!” to that.
